June 12, 2021 - Super Saturday Quads

Updated: Jun 16

June 12th we welcomed back lots of players to our Super Saturday Quads! A big thank you to you all, and a special thank you to our seven new players: Ricnesh, Taran, Eesha, Shawn, Sawarthi, Derek, and Anvay!

Let’s look at the highlights:

In Over 1000 Section 1, it was a great start for Ricnesh who beat everyone in the highest section despite this being his first ICA tournament. Not only that, but he completed the tournament with a perfect score. We hope that this is the beginning of a great run. Nicely done Ricnesh!

In Over 1000 Section 2 Ekeoma won with a perfect 3/3 points. Each game was crazy, unbalanced, and exciting, but his eye for tactics allowed him to see wins in the end. His game against Jacob, was selected as our game of the week. You can review it here: https://www.chess.com/game/live/17261518151. Amazing job Ekeoma!

In Over 1000 Section 3, Matthew finished on top with 3 points. This was especially impressive as he had to play black in his first two games, but that didn’t stop him. He gained advantages as a result of his excellent middlegame play. Great work Matthew!

In Under 1000 Section 1, Andrew grabbed the victory with a solid 2.5/3, just .5 points ahead of Murugan, who placed second. All of his games ended in complex endgames, but Andrew maneuvered through it all to a great result. Congrats!

In Under 1000 Section 2 and his Super Saturday debut Shawn, was the victor! He finished with 2.5 points, just ahead of Ayush with 2 points and in second place. Shawn demonstrated great skill with knight forks, and he pushed his pawns nicely. Again, we will hope that this is the beginning of a great run too. Nice Shawn!

Under 1000 Section 3 was extremely dramatic. None of the players avoided defeat. In the end, Vihaan and Aarnav deservedly tied, with both finishing with 2 points and excellent overall play. Congratulations both winners!

In Under 1000 Section 4, Charles clinched first place with a flawless 3/3 performance. He played exciting, attacking, and aggressive chess. And because of this, all three times, he quickly delivered a checkmate. Great job Charles!

In Under 1000 Section 5, the winner was Derek, with a perfect 3 points. He dominated the games and showed a sharp eye for spotting his opponent's mistakes. Whenever they made an error, he knew exactly how to capitalize on it to gain advantage. Congratulations Derek!

In Under 1000 Section 6 , Ashton was the victor with 3/3. The decisive game ended up being a second-round victory over Anvay (second place). Ashton used a discovered attack to win extra material and break through the opponent’s defenses. Nice job Ashton!

In Under 1000 Section 7, Sean took first place with a fantastic 3/3 points. The first round didn’t look very promising, he was down -8 in material and in a lost position. However, he fought back, showed great persistence, and went on to win the tournament. Very well done!
